Magnetic Resonance Imaging

What Is It?

magnetic resonance imaging, teal down arrow

MRIs–-short for Magnetic Resonance Imaging-–are non-invasive imaging studies utilizing a magnetic field of radio wave energy to produce images of internal structures of the body. The detailed internal images created by an MRI scan differ from those from an x-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan, helping radiologists identify and diagnose injury or disease with pinpoint accuracy. MRIs do not use radiation to create images and are typically used to scan the chest, abdomen, pelvic organs, brain, blood vessels, extremities, and to diagnose diseases such as tumors, brain, or heart disorders. Some MRI exams utilize an injection of contrast material.

Examples of procedures include:

  • MRI Body
  • MRI Brain
  • MRI Chest
  • MRI Lumbar spine
  • MRI Prostate
  • MRI Breast
  • Cardiac MRI

Before your exam

If your exam requires the use of contrast (a substance taken orally or injected to help improve evaluation of normal or abnormal structures), you may be asked to fast for 6 hours prior to your appointment and refrain from liquids 1 hour before the exam. As this machine uses a large magnet, you must remove anything with metal including watches, jewelry, or eye makeup (as some contain metallic substances). You may also be asked to remove facial piercings. Please let your technologist know if you have any metal fragments in your body (such as bullets, prostheses, or if you have been exposed to fine metal).

Time required

for your exam

MRI scan times can vary, but average 20 to 30 minutes. During this time, it’s imperative that you lie still in the tunnel-like machine and may be asked to hold your breath for a few moments at a time. If you are claustrophobic or have anxiety, please inform your MRI technologist and they will work with you to make the procedure more comfortable.
